AT&T reportedly to offer iPhone without 2-year contract

19.03.2009
AT&T will shortly launch a new iPhone offering, allowing its existing customers to buy the phone without having to also sign a 2-year service contract, according to online smartphone blog, .

The Web site based the post on a purportedly official AT&T PowerPoint presentation that it had obtained. The presentation was apparently intended to brief AT&T customer care reps on the new "No Commit" program.

The program is targeted only at existing AT&T customers, according to the documents. It's intended for those who want to "add a line, purchase as a gift, or perform and [sic] upgrade" and who are ineligible for AT&T's Qualified or Early Upgrade pricing.

The immediate result is a big jump in the pricetag of the iPhone itself. With No Commit, an existing AT&T customer would pay US$600 for the 8Gbyte iPhone or $700 for the 16Gbyte model.

Currently, a new customer would pay either $200 or $300 for the same phones, and accept a two-year service contract, according to . The contract includes a mandatory $30/month data plan, and a choice of voice/minute packages ranging from $40 to $100/month. Texting packages are separate.

The carrier now also offers refurbished versions of both iPhone models, each $100 less than the cost of new handsets.
