Are displays getting greener, or is the bar being lowered?

In 2008, only 20 percent of new flat panel displays had environmentally friendly features. But by 2014, all will, according to a new report by , a flat panel display analysis company.

The new report, , examined environmental regulations, power-saving technologies, production techniques, and packaging of LCD and plasma displays. It found 2008 to be "the year of green FPD development, with green panels accounting for nearly 20% of the total [US]$95.6 billion market," according to . DisplaySearch expects 70 percent of the market to be green by 2012, and 100 percent by 2014.

But the report, which was not made available to the press, appears to have a very broad definition of green. "DisplaySearch defines green flat panel displays as those which meet one [emphasis added] of the following conditions," the press release explains. It then lists six conditions, including "use of green or eco-friendly concepts in product design, packaging methods or materials." That doesn't seem particularly difficult to achieve.

DisplaySearch lists four reasons why companies choose to make green displays which include government regulation, social responsibility, and cost reduction. If that last one seems counterintuitive, see by DisplaySearch Vice President David Hsieh, which explains how eliminating waste can save money.
